Three insightfulfacts that link to the title Valentine presents conflict within relationships through the speaker’s resistance to romantic cliché. Duffy demonstrates the difficulty of expressing love honestly through the use of a fragmented monologue form. The reader is not an observer but is addressed directly, thus bringing us in to the centre of the poem and showing how this is not an exceptional case.

  10. Writing a poetry essay…

  11. In Belfast Confetti, the poet use enjambment throughout the poem to create a more realistic impression of the poet’s emotional state whilst in the midst of social conflict. This sense of panic is reinforced by the use of plosives; “bolts…explosion…burst” throughout the poem create a sense of action, through short, bursting consonants. These phonological features of the poem emphasise the physical and human impact of conflict; it is not only what happens in the political realm but is an aggressive and confusing reality for real people.
