Solving Multiplication and Division Equations

Solving Multiplication and Division Equations. By, Mrs. Muller. Important Properties to Recall. Division Property of Equality: 4x2=8 so 4x2/2=8/2 or a=b and c does not equal 0, then a/c=b/c Multiplication Property of Equality: If 5=5, then 5x2=5x2 or if a=b, then ax2=bx2

  1. Solving Multiplication and Division Equations By, Mrs. Muller

  2. Important Properties to Recall • Division Property of Equality: 4x2=8 so 4x2/2=8/2 or a=b and c does not equal 0, then a/c=b/c • Multiplication Property of Equality: If 5=5, then 5x2=5x2 or if a=b, then ax2=bx2 • The Identity Property of Multiplication: 1x8=8 and 8x1=8 or ax1=a or 1xa=a

  3. Solving Multiplication Equations • First Lets look at solving equations that involves multiplication. • First recall that the goal is to isolate the variable by using the inverse operation. • The inverse operation would be in this case of multiplication is division. • We would have to divide both sides by the number by the variable in order to isolate the variable. • On the next slide lets look at an example of this to make it easier to understand.

  4. Solving Multiplication Equations • 4n=68 4n=68 4 4 1n= 17 n=17 4n means that the 4 is being multiplied by the n Isolate the variable. Use the Division Property of Equality Simplify the fractions by dividing (4/4=1 and 68/4=17) or reducing Use the Identity Property of Multiplication

  5. Solving Division Equations • First Lets look at solving equations that involves division. • First recall that the goal is to isolate the variable by using the inverse operation. • The inverse operation would be in this case of division is multiplication. • We would have to multiply both sides by the number that is dividing the variable in order to isolate the variable. • On the next slide lets look at an example of this to make it easier to understand.

  6. Solving Division Equations • d/10=64 10(d/10)=64(10) 1d=640 d=640 d/10 means that d is being divided into 10 sections/groups/ pieces/etc. Isolate the variable. Use the Multiplication property of Equality Simplify by multiplying 10x1/10=10/10=1 and 64x10=640 Use the Identity property of Multiplication
