  3. Frame • We will analyze how identity plays a role in our lives. • EQ: In what ways can identity impact our decisions? • I will complete a handout related to my own identity.

  4. Rules for Training • Participation is crucial • No wrong/stupid answers • Respect one another • No talking while others talk • No rude comments or noises • Wait until you’re called upon

  5. Why we’re here… • Because we have to be • To learn some skills that will carry over into adulthood • To learn more about ourselves

  6. How we’re going to do it… • Discussion • Everyone participates • Some, very little lecture • Activity or activities • Some Conclusions

  8. Ice Breaker • What is an ice breaker? • Definition of an ice breaker: • An activity used to lighten the mood and or get participants warmed up to the idea of interaction

  10. Topic of the Day – Knowing Yourself • What is “Identity?” • How do people identify themselves? • What are some different groups people belong to?

  11. Topic of the Day – Knowing Yourself • Why do people identify themselves with those groups in particular? • Is it ok for people from different groups to interact? Why or why not?

  12. Definition of Identity • According to Merriam Webster’s Online Dictionary: • The distinguishing character or personality of an individual • The condition of being in the same with something described or asserted

  13. Reasons people identify with different groups… • Were born into it, things that were decided before they were born • Like or believe in the same things

  14. Reasons people identify with different groups… • People around them tell them they are a certain way • Want to belong to something • Any combination of the above

  15. Activity: This is Who I Am • Activity sheet p. 23 (working alone) – Volunteer read instructions • Someone read the instructions • Fill out your own sheets • Individual presentations

  16. Conclusions • We identify ourselves with… • Things that happened before we were born • How we’ve been raised • Things (talents, skills, abilities) we were born with • What we like and grow to like • Our decisions or the way we act
