Bill of Rights - 1689 • PROVISIONS • Parliament would chose the ruler • Parliament would meet frequently • Ruler may not suspend any law. • Ruler may not impose any tax without Parliament’s approval • SAFEGUARDS • Protected Parliamentarians’ right to speak. • Protected individuals from excessive bail and unusual punishment

  3. Habeas Corpus Act - 1679 • PROVISIONS • Anyone arrested may demand to be charged within a reasonable amount of time or be released. • SAFEGUARDS • Protected individuals from being arbitrarily (for no particular reason)arrested and imprisoned.

  4. Act of Toleration - 1689 • PROVISIONS • Freedom of Worship for non-Anglicans, except Catholics and Jews. • Freedom of Conscience. • SAFEGUARDS • Protected Religious freedom

  5. Act of Settlement - 1701 • PROVISIONS • If William II and Mary III died without heirs, the throne would be given to Mary’s next Protestant relative. • Went James I’s granddaughter , Sophia, Electress of Hannover (Germany) • SAFEGUARDS • Ensured that no Catholic would take the throne.
