  2. Who is Athena? • Greek Mythology • Goddess of • Wisdom • Intellect • Invention

  3. MIT Athena • Athena was developed here in the early ‘80’s • A campus-wide, networked computer system serving MIT’s academic community • Comprised of 100s of computers connected to MITNet • Available to you at workstations in Athena “clusters”

  4. What Athena is.. • A set of computing tools built originally to work with Unix, now also comes in a Linux flavor • A layer on top of the operating system • A environment consisting of clients (workstations) and servers: • File servers • Print Servers • Post Office Servers

  5. Some characteristics of Athena • Distributed file system – your files are not stored on the computer where you work • Secure and robust • Well suited to scientific and engineering applications • Configurations and preferences are stored on the network and follow you around

  6. MIT email – don’t go there • Every Athena user account comes with an MIT email account. You will get one. • PLEASE DO NOT USE IT. • We do not provide support, or training for MIT email. • You will lose this account after you leave MIT.

  7. WHERE are Athena clusters? • Locations throughout campus • Select > Other Options > Map/Status of Athena

  8. Recommended Athena Clusters: Not all Workstations are Created Equal. - Student Center W20-575 - 56-129 (all with cd-wr drives) - 2-225 - 66-080 • IBM and Dell PCs most familiar. • Sun Spark and Sun Ultra workstations have different keyboards and different control processes. S/W discussed in this presentation works fine on them.

Get Your Laptop on the Net Visitor Access to MIT Wireless network • Need your own wireless card (configured for DHCP, with firewall disabled during registration) • Open a browser (in an area with wireless service) and point to any URL to register • Visitors can register for up to 5 days at a time, 14 total • To print, use MToolsFM on Athena • IS&T Help Desk: 617-253-1101

Get Your Laptop on the Net Holiday Inn wireless network • Available in rooms and public spaces • Need your own wireless card (DHCP) or borrow adapter from the Hotel • Open a browser and point to any URL to register • Free printing at the front desk (see handout) • Firewall recommended • Help desk service 1.877.755.0550

Don’t forget about theLibrary • MIT library system one of the most extensive in the world. • Register your MIT ID card when using library for first time. • Go to any circulation desk. • Tell them you’re with SMA. • Borrow Books. Return them. • Due date for all books: Aug 17. • Book may show later due date. Ignore it. • Access on-line library resources at http://libraries.mit.edu
