Historical Background

final flowering of Baroque

peaked in the reign of Louis XV in France.

By 1790 spread to castles and churches in Austria and Germany.

After Death of Louis XIV French nobles regained freedom & privileges

Elite women had strong influence on culture during the Enlightenment


Rococo Subject Matter

  • Epitomized the lifestyle of rich nobles

  • Romantic couples often in elegant outdoor settings such as Versailles

  • “Back to nature” and mythological themes,very superficial

  • Often integrated angels or goddesses into the pictures.


Rococo Characteristics

  • light and lively colors and designs

  • curves and ribbon designs on gilded woodwork.

  • Paintings graceful with more feminine colors: pastels, pinks, light blues, silver and gold.
