research design
Research Design
  • Comprehensive interview & survey project
  • 188 survey respondents
  • Pre-test and one, four, & twelve month surveys
  • Delivered customized LMI in group, one-to-one or control (no custom LMI) after pre-test
  • 27 one-month & 6 twelve-month interviews
  • Reviewed self-efficacy and outcome changes comparing treatment to control
customized lmi package
Customized LMI Package
  • General info on LMI and its uses
  • Skills identification and transfer
  • Use of sites geared towards manufacturing related work
  • Strong value of interpreted LMI
  • Positive feedback on package
key research question
Key Research Question
  • Does the provision of customized LMI (developed for displaced workers focused on labour mobility to new growth sectors) change displaced workers job related self-efficacy? (H1)
  • Tested null hypothesis with control group
quantitative findings
Quantitative Findings
  • Key findings for each hypothesis
  • Results supported project objectives
  • Still difficult to completely isolate exact customized LMI impact, but strong findings of influence on self-efficacy and increased job-seeking behaviours
  • Not as strong a tie to job outcomes, but still valuable
qualitative findings
Qualitative Findings
  • Positive support for the development of customized LMI
  • Delivery modes dependant on client needs
  • Group delivery more valued in reinforcing job-seeking behaviours and more residual impact
  • One-to-one had more influence on career development choices and behaviours
limitations of this research
Limitations of this Research
  • Field work in one sector/locale may influence applicability of results to other areas/sectors
  • Sample size somewhat limits reliability of findings
  • Attrition rates and one-time delivery of LMI reduce learnings on longer term impacts
  • Sample demographics may limit transferability to other populations
key implications for field study
Key Implications for Field Study
  • Value of customized LMI for each sector
  • Timing of LMI delivery (how soon after job loss)
  • Mandatory communication of research opportunities by agencies funded by federal & provincial governments
  • Incentive (value and use to prevent attrition)
key implications for lmi delivery
Key Implications for LMI Delivery
  • “Service passport” to avoid duplication of LMI training efforts
  • Emphasis on group counseling for job-seekers (in person and social media)
  • Computer literacy training
  • Specific needs of older workers
  • Employers – skills inventories
implications for future research
Implications for Future Research
  • Expand study to larger samples (using alternate populations of displaced workers)
  • Focus more directly on the impact of ambient job announcements on job seeker behaviour and self efficacy
  • Research on an optimal time frame for LMI
  • Further investigation into the value of formal and informal group support
