What is Media Literacy? “Understanding how mass media work, how they construct and produce meaning, how the media are organized, and knowing how to use them wisely.  In short, it is seen to empower people to be both critical thinkers and creative producers of an increasingly wide range of messages using images, sound and language.” (Carlson 21-22)

  3. Theory, Anyone? Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory • Using Different media provides more opportunities for teachers to differentiate their lessons for individual learners • Text= visual learning • Recorded Audio= auditory learning • Film= auditory/visual learning

  4. What does the State have to say? • 1.9.12.A: Use media and technology resources for research, information, analysis, problem solving, and decision making in content learning. Identify complexities and inconsistencies in the information and the different perspectives found in each medium.

Why should we take Media Literacy seriously? “As a matter of fact, media have become part and parcel of the upbringing and socialization processes of all girls and boys and therefore need to be considered by parents, educators, and media professionals as seriously as formal education.” (Kahn 15)

  10. If educators want to their students to be prepared to live and function in modern American society, they have no choice but to integrate media literacy into their curriculum with fervor.
