Work in progress A visual comparison between mock catalogues and 6dF data Mock catalogues from Shaun Cole, Durham Astrophysics Theory group and VIRGO consortium The surfaces shown enclose minimal spanning trees formed by a maximum percolation distance of 100 km/s and with a minimum of 50 member galaxies. The view is towards the South Celestial Pole, Northern Galactic Hemisphere to the left, Southern Galactic Hemisphere towards the right. The 6dF data (early 2005) used here is a bit thin towards the centre (i.e. towards the SCP). The images can, if necessary, be viewed in 3D with ChromoDepth spectacles. Otherwise depth can be perceived by white=near, blue=far. Tony Fairall, Department of Astronomy, University of Cape Town.   13. Comments: The general similarity of texture speaks well for the simulations, and the differences are often more subtle than obvious. Void sizes is one discriminator, proportion of open space another. Not knowing the parameters of the mock catalogues, I could take an unbiased view. The best match in my opinion was with Mock catalogue number 2.

  25. In general the mock catalogues seem ‘too busy’ compared to 6dF. 6dF shows much more open space. Mock catalogue 1 seems the best fit.

  37. In general, the mock catalogues seem too crowded, and have far too little open spaces, compared to 6dF. The Mock catalogues suggest a fractal structure that repeats on ever smaller scales, while 6dF seems to ‘go no further’. Best match, in my opinion, would be Mock catalogue 1.
