  1. Math and Science Course Requirements For High School graduation and requirements for four year college entry.

Graduation RequirementsAccording to the State Dept. of Education November 2011 • English/Language Arts 4.0 • Mathematics 4.0 • Science 3.0 • U.S. History and Constitution 1.0 • Economics .5 • U.S. Government .5 • Other Social Studies 1.0 • Physical Education or Junior ROTC 1.0 • Computer Science (including keyboarding) 1.0 • Foreign Language or Career and Technology Education 1.0 • Electives 7.0 • Total 24.0 • In addition the students must have 0.5 credit of a health course and pass the exit exam before graduation.

  3. College Entry RequirementsFor 2011 + from SC CHE • English • 4 Units • Math • 4 Units • Lab Science • 3 Units of Lab Science • Foreign Language • 2 Units of the Same Foreign Language • Social Science • 3 Units • Fine Arts • 1 Unit • Elective • 1 Unit • Physical Ed or JROTC • 1 Unit

  4. Science Requirements Graduation from High School Students planning to attend a four year college 3 Units 2 units must be in two different fields (Biology, Chemistry or Physics). A third can be in the same field as another. Courses in earth science, physical science or environmental science do not meet the requirement. Marine Biology and Human Anatomy do meet the requirements. • 3 Units • The class options are explained under the sequence slides.

  5. Science requirements for some of the four year colleges in South Carolina • Clemson – 4 units • USC – 3 units • College of Charleston – 4 units • Coastal – 3 units • All information obtained from college admissions websites, October 2010.

  6. Science sequence for Honors/AP These courses are listed in the order they should be taken. (Math Prerequisites are listed beside the course if applicable.) • Honors Physical Science (Honors Algebra 1 prerequisite) • Honors Biology 1 • Honors Chemistry 1 These next courses may be taken in any order after successful completion of the previous courses. • AP Biology. This is a year long course. • Honors Chemistry 2 (Honors Algebra 2 prerequisite) • Honors Physics (Honors Algebra 1 prerequisite)

  7. Science sequence for CP These courses are listed in the order they should be taken. (Math Prerequisites are listed beside the course if applicable.) • CP Biology 1 • CP Physical Science (Algebra 1 prerequisite) • CP Chemistry 1 These next courses may be taken in any order after successful completion of the previous courses. • CP Biology 2 • CP Chemistry 2 (CP Algebra 2 prerequisite) • CP Physics (CP Algebra 1 prerequisite)

Science requirements for Tech These courses are listed in the order they should be taken. • Applied Biology 1 (1/2 credit) • Applied Biology 2 (1/2 credit) • Tech Physical Science • Earth Science The next courses may be taken only with successful completion of algebra 1 and recommendation from the students physical science teacher. • CP Chemistry 1

Math Requirements Graduation from High School Students planning to attend a four year college 4 Units Algebra 1 (Applied Math/Algebra Tech 1 and 2 may count together as a substitute if Algebra 2 is successfully completed), Algebra 2 and Geometry. A fourth course can be selected from Algebra 3/Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, discrete math or a senior level capstone math • 4 Units • The class options are explained under the sequence slides.
