  2. I. The Invaders • A. Carolingian dynasty fell after Charlemagne died in 814 • B. Muslims invaded southern France, Magyars invaded western Europe, Vikings from Scandinavia invaded and sacked costal towns in Europe • 1. Vikings were known for ship building • 2. By 911 they were Christianized and living in Normandy

  3. II. The development of Feudalism • A. Feudalism- a system where poor farmers looked to the aristocracy to protect them • B. Vassal- any man who serves another man militarily • C. The army included foot soldiers, and knights- armored cavalry (upper class)

  4. D. Wealth was based on land ownership • 1. Lords granted vassals land in order to get their loyalty and military service • 2. Granted land was called a fief • E. Feudal Contract- Unwritten rules between a lord and vassal • 1. Vassals owed military service and money

  5. F. Castles were made up of many parts • 1. Motte- a hill • 2. Bailey- an open space • 3. Keep- central building with a great hall and rooms • * All were encircled by a large wall • * See picture on 295

  6. III. Nobility • A. Nobles were kings, dukes, counts, barons, popes, and bishops • B. The idea of chivalry developed as the ideal of behavior for the upper-class • C. Women ran large estates, but were under the control of men • D. Eleanor of Aquitaine- one of the wealthiest women of the middle ages who was queen of England and France

Centralized Governments were torn apart Warriors swore oath of loyalty to leaders and fought for them Man performed an acto of homage to his lord Vassal required to appear when summoned and make finacial payments to lord Lord required to protect his vassal Lord made a grant of land to his vassal People turned to powerful lords for protection in exchange for service Leaders took care of warriors needs Take a few minutes to Match the cause with the effect
