  3. Jobs • Majority are no longer industrial workers (blue collar) • Business- sales, insurance, advertising (white collar) • Job security • GI Bill – Servicemen’s Readjustment Act

  4. Suburbs • More $ from stable jobs • Affordable automobiles • Work in cities not live in them • Better schools, safe, healthy environment, neighbors

  5. Baby Boomers • Men coming home from war • Large growth of babies born 1946-1964 • Medical advancements • Typhoid Fever, Polio vaccines • Not as many deaths

  6. Consumerism • Shopping malls • TVs • McDonald’s, TV dinners, Coke

  7. Women • Keeper of the suburban dream • Wife, mother, housekeeper • 1950 survey – 1/5 dissatisfied and bored • Nurses, teachers, secretaries and going to college • Less money, less opportunities

  8. Leisure • More time and $ to relax and enjoy life • Men working 40 hrs a week, paid vacation • Labor savers • Dishwashers, washing machines, lawn mowers • Sports: played and watched • Pro baseball, football, basketball • Books and magazines • Romance novels, magazines, comic books

  9. Automobiles • Cars and gas are less expensive • More cars = more roads • Interstate highways • Route 66 • Traveling, shopping, drive in
