  1. City of KimballStormwater Re-use Project Protecting our Water Resources – a Forum Series for Policy Makers March 30, 2011

  2. Project Purposes • Reduce nutrient and sediment load to Willow Creek and impaired Lake Betsey • Protect trout stream Willow Creek from thermal impacts • Aesthetic and drainage improvements to park • Beneficial re-use of stormwater • Reduce city operating costs

  3. Kimball, Minnesota About 650 residents 17 miles south of St. Cloud 21 miles northwest of Buffalo Clearwater River Watershed District

  4. Drainage Area 71 acres routed to Highway 15 ditch Ditch discharges into Willow Creek No water quality treatment, volume, or rate control

  5. Willow Creek

  6. Overland flow from parking area Existing ditch

  7. Project Concept Re-route runoff from the 1-inch event to a temporary storage area for later beneficial use as irrigation water. Intercepting runoff and re-using the water for irrigation allows it to infiltrate and recharge shallow groundwater. Add treatment prior to discharge to Willow Creek.

  8. 0.5 acre-feet Pump House Rain Garden Agridrain

  9. Rain Garden Storage Pond

  10. Project Costs and Funding • Cost: • Construction: $100,000 • Rain Garden: $6,000 materials, volunteer labor • City’s annual O&M • Funding: • Clean Water Legacy Grant: $70,900 • Clearwater River WD: $30,000 • City of Kimball: $12,000

  11. Harvest and Re-use of Stormwater • Can provide an alternate source of water for irrigation • Need to factor in quality of stormwater • Avoid spring runoff with high chloride concentrations • Not suitable for spray irrigation of food crops • Limited use on high body-contact locations • Using water where it falls
