  15. UN/ECE TSIED – Answers the Question: What can Governments in Transition Economies do to Encourage Enterprise Development and Economic Growth Through the Adoption of International Standards for Electronic Business?

  16. eBusiness Repository - Background • Transition economy region’s quality of technology infrastructure necessary to support e-business transactions is still under development • Most transition economy governments have centralized databases of registered businesses • E-Business requires trusted sources of business data, usually available from government agencies • Sustainability of business repositories requires access to officially maintained sources of data

  17. eBusiness Repository - Background • Many transition economy governments asking TSIED for help in getting started now with e-business infrastructure projects • Transition economy government databases of registered businesses provide a good foundation for future e-business transaction marketplaces • Transition economy governments have allocated funds, but need public-private sector partnerships • European Commission project funding • NGOs to organize private industry participants & funds

  18. eBusiness Repository - Types of Information • What am I? • Agent/object (API), document (DTD), database (schema) • Who am I? [TSIED E-Government Core Info] • Company name, contact, company ID (e.g. DUNS number, product/service categories, public key certificates • What services do I offer? • Buy, Sell, Request For Bids, Search Catalogues, Currency Conversation, Language Translation • What information can I provide? • Product list, price list, terms and conditions, product catalogue, order form

  19. eBusiness Repository – Research Background • Research & development in Registries and Repositories is extensive: • Dublin Core Specification, 1997 • CommerceNet eCo Framework WG & Spec., 1998-99 • OASIS Reg/Rep TC, 1999-2001 • ebXML Reg/Rep Project Team & Spec., 1999-2001 • UDDI Specification, 2000-present • OASIS ebXML Reg/Rep TC, 2001-present

  20. eBusiness Repository - Background • Registries generally contain the meta-data (data about data) that provides the common structure definitions, along with lists of information types • Repositories generally are the storehouses of the actual business data instances, and there can be different repositories of different types of data.

  21. TSIED Core Biz Data Rep. The eCo Architecture Specification CommerceNet eCo Framework WG 1998

  22. eBusiness Repository - Background • The need for inter-operable business registries & repositories has been recognized as a crucial element for global marketplaces • European Commission endorsed the eCo Framework Architecture in 1998 • UN/ECE through UN/CEFACT endorsed development of ebXML Registry-Repository specifications

  23. eBusiness Repository - Exchanges, e-markets, supply chains need combinations of multiple Web Services • Auction, pricing, tax computation, customs, RFP, RFQ, order management, content management • No two exchanges, e-markets, supply chains will use the same: • Service combination • Particular service packages. • The complexity of this requires a common foundation of business data and open interfaces • Standard interface for globally distributed repositories • Minimal engineering effort to connect different sites
