  1. What is an occupation? And how is it different from a job or a career?

  2. An Occupation is… • A general name for a kind of work that people do in many different ways and places. • For example: • Teaching is an occupation that includes kindergarten teachers, high school teachers, principals and many others.

  3. What is a Job? And how is it different from an occupation or a career?

  4. A Job is… • One person’s task or tasks in one work situation, may be full or part-time, short or long duration. • For example: • A secretary at your school

  5. What is a Career? And how is it different from an occupation or a job?

  6. A Career is… • The combined total of all the events in a person’s life from the time he/she is born, including education, work, family, leisure activities, and more.

  7. Let’s Practice!

  8. Kelly is a recent graduate from college. She has just started working as a secretary for a major law firm. She is in charge of filing cases and sorting mail. Is this her job or her occupation?

  9. Her Job! • Why? • It is something specific that she does for the company.

  10. Brad’s field is criminal justice. He can either be a police officer, a forensic scientist, or a judge. Is this his career or his occupation?

  11. His Occupation! • Why? • He works in the field of criminal justice and can do any number of jobs within the field.

  12. Michael is 65 years old and is retiring this year. Throughout his life he has worked as a bank teller, a real estate agent, and a teacher. Is this his career, his job, or his occupation?

  13. His Career! • Why? • It is all of the jobs that he has had throughout the course of his life.

  15. You are creating people! • You are to create characters that fit under any 5 of the 8 intelligences. • For example, “Jim, the Jungle Boy” is considered Nature smart. • Or “Suzy the Soccer Player” is considered body smart.

  16. For each person you are going to… • Classify the intelligence type • Body smart, word smart, self smart, etc. • Write down at least three activities that your person likes. • For example, Jim the Jungle Boy likes going hiking, collecting leaves, and smelling flowers. • Explain why your person likes each of these activities.

  17. For each person you are going to… • Identify your person’s favorite subjects in school. • I.e., Suzy likes Gym Class and Jim likes Earth Science. • Draw (and color) a picture/poster of each of your people.

  18. Lastly… • Choose a career for each of your people. • When choosing, make sure you consider… • Their intelligence type • Their activities • Their personality traits • Their interests

  19. Grading… • Each person that you create is worth six points towards your final grade!
