  5. AnoangCecidFly (Kurikong)? ORDER: Diptera FAMILY: Cecidomyiidae Scientific Name: Procantariniafrugivora Source: Dr. Celia Medina Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  6. AnoangCecid Fly (Kurikong)? • Very small dipteran • close relative of the mosquito • Short life-cycle : 8-12 days • Larvae feed on fruits for 4-5 days Source: Dr. Celia Medina • Adults do not stay permanently on mango • Stays on wild vegetation in surrounding areas • Very sensitive to light • Very active in humid conditions • Found only in the Philippines (P. frugivora) Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  7. Ang Buhay ng Kurikong? (1 to 2 days) (1 to 2 days) DAMAGING!!! (8 to 12 days) LIFE CYCLE (4 to 5 days) (1 to 2 days) (2 to 3 days) Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY Source: C DR Medina, RP Pamiloza, JG Apolinario, LR Velasco. CECID FLY. DA-BAR Funded Project

  8. Critical Period of Infestation: • Fruit Development: Starting at 32 DAFI • Simultaneous egg-laying • Entire orchard can be damaged overnight • Adult lay eggs on the fruit’s surface Source: Dr. Celia Medina • Damage is seen when eggs hatch and larvae eats and develops Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  9. BakitNagkakaproblemasaKurikong: • Insecticide Resistance • Maling timing sapag Spray • Hindi kumpletoangproteksyonsabungamataposang spray Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  10. Damage: Kurikong, Buti, Armalite, Tusok Saksak Walis, Nora-Nora • Galling of young leaves • On fruits : • Circular brown scab-like spots randomly distributed on the fruit surface • Scabby lesions are retained and enlarges up to harvest, affecting their quality • In most cases, the fruitlets are badly damaged and fall off • Presence of small, yellowish larvae in and around the lesions Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  11. Damage (examples): Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  12. Cecid Fly vs Capsid Bug CAPSID BUG: • Scientific Name: Helopeltisbakeri • Life Cycle: 35 to 42 days • Does note normally feeds on the fruits but lay eggs on mango • Many host plants (mango, cashew, hagonoy, cotton, etc.) Source: C DR Medina, RP Pamiloza, JG Apolinario, LR Velasco. CECID FLY. DA-BAR Funded Project

  13. Cecid Fly Management: • Monitor for possible signs of damage starting at fruit setting stage / hugas (~ 32 DAFI) • Spray recommended insecticide and application timing • Alternate insecticides with different modes of action • Practice proper sanitation in the orchard • Fruit bagging

  14. Control Of Cecid Fly (Kurikong) Procontariniafrugivora: The Potential of Agrimek 1.8 EC Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  15. INSECTICIDE TRIAL Source: Dr. Celia DR Medina. Updates on Cecid Fly Control, Agrimek Launching, Davao Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  23. Mode-of-action and cross-resistance • It is common for resistance to develop based on a genetic modification of the target site. When this happens, the interaction of the selecting compound with its target site is impaired and the compound loses its pesticidal efficacy. • Generally, an organism that develops resistance to one crop protection product will also be resistant to other crop protection products that have the same mode of action. This is termed cross-resistance • It is this concept of cross-resistance within a family of chemically related insecticides or acaricides that is the basis of the IRAC MoA classification. Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  24. Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  25. Principles of Insecticide Resistance Management General Insecticide Resistance Management Guidelines Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  26. Mode of Action Classification Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  27. How Resistance Develops in a Population MoA “X” spray MoA “X” spray Survivors Reproduce Survivors Reproduce 33% Resistant Population 1% Resistant Population 70% Resistant Population Increasing resistance by selecting “R” individuals through time Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY

  28. Basic Principle: Frequency of genes for resistance to an insecticide will decline during application of alternative insecticide with different mode of action (MoA)….increasing product longevity!! Rotate Insecticides of different Mode of Action Classification: INTERNAL USE ONLY
