  4. Sermon • Psalm 115Be Careful What You Worship

  5. “You are what you…….”

  6. Every day you are on a trajectory toward being a deaf and dump, lifeless, stupid, uncaring, amoral version of an idol, OR you are on a trajectory towards being the wiser, transformed, satisfied, deeper, and more beautifully authentic person that God created you to be.

  7. PSALM 115 • [1] Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! • [2] Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” [3] Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.

  8. [4] Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. [5] They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. [6] They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. [7] They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. • [8] Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.

  9. [9] O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield. [10] O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield. [11] You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

  10. [12] The LORD has remembered us; he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron; [13] he will bless those who fear the LORD, both the small and the great.

  11. [14] May the LORD give you increase, you and your children! [15] May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth! • 16] The heavens are the LORD's heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man.

  12. [17] The dead do not praise the LORD, nor do any who go down into silence. • [18] But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and forevermore. Praise the LORD! (Psalm 115 ESV)

  13. v. 1-8 – Only One God is Worthy of Praise • v. 9-11 Let God’s People trust Him as their help and shield • v. 12-15 The Lord blesses His faithful people • v. 16-18 We will bless the Lord forever

  14. v. 1-8 – Only One God is Worthy of Praise • “Non Nobis Domine = Not to us O Lord,” • Why God alone is worthy of glory • -because of His steadfast love and faithfulness; • -because He is in the heavens and He does all that He pleases,

  15. “[8] Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them..” •  YOU ARE WHAT YOU WORSHIP… • Do you want to be like an idol? Senseless, deaf, dumb and stupid. Do you want to be powerless in the day of God?

  16. Malcolm Muggeridge • “In the twentieth century, man has created the most disastrous of all images (idols), which is himself, and he falls down and worships him….

  17. Never in human history have the unworthwhile things of life been presented so alluringly, through advertising… This is Vanity Fair into every single person’s sitting room, hours and hours of it, day after day.”

  18. 95. Q. What is idolatry? • A. Idolatry is having or inventing something in which to put our trust instead of, or in addition to, the only true God who has revealed Himself in His Word.

  19. v. 9-11 Let God’s People trust Him as their help and shield • We turn either to useless idols, or to a personal saving God – Yahweh, “Éternel” – the great I AM. • We must remind ourselves that our idols won’t die for us, nor will they forgive us.

  20. [22] You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. [23] But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. [24] God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:22-24 ESV)

  21. God is not ashamed to be your help and shield – • HE SEEKS WORSHIPERS WHO WILL COME TO HIM.

  22. v. 12-15 The Lord blesses His faithful people • v. 16-18 We will bless the Lord forever • There should not be a day in your life when you do not make the argument of Psalm 115 to yourself.

  23. IMAGINE A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE who live it out in this simple way… • “For Your glory and with Your help”.

  24. Non pas à nous Éternel, • mais à ton nom donne gloire. – • Not to us O LORD, but to your name give glory.
