  7. Pre-master Programme The pre-master’s (compulsary) courses are: • Communication Science(192470410) (5 EC) • AcademicWriting(201400328) (5 EC) • Research Meth. andDesc. Stat. Rules in the Pre-master Programme! • The pre-master’s programmeis (a full-time) programme of 30 EC (1 semester on the basis of 40 hours of study a week). • All pre-Master’s courses must be successfully completed before you can enroll in the Master programmeComunication Science. • The maximum registration period for completing the pre-master’s programme is 1 year. During this period you may maximal sit 2 times for an exam. If you do not pass the second time for one ore more exams you will be excluded from the pre-master’s programme. • Obligatory prior knowledge to start with the course Research Project Communication Science, Research Meth & Des. Statistics at least grade 5 AND Academic Writing at least grade 6!

Education and Examination Regulations (EER) • The Education and Examination Regulations or ‘student charters’ provide information about the rights and obligations for students. • There is a general BMS faculty wide student charter for the bachelor and master and there are programme specific charters for each bachelor and master education • The student charters are available online at: https://www.utwente.nl/en/bms/examboard/

Student Information Systems • A listing of all student applications is available on https://www.utwente.nl/en/education/current-students/ • Some important applications are: • OSIRIS – Course registration and study progress monitoring • CANVAS – All course related information • MyTimetable – Educational roster • Webmail – student e-mail access • A presentation about the use these applications is online available at: https://www.utwente.nl/onderwijssystemen/en/about_the_applications/new_students/

  16. Student Information Systems  OSIRIS • In OSIRIS you can: • Upload your photo to receive your student card = important • Note: Your student card is needed to take exams..! More info available at: https://www.utwente.nl/ces/studentservices/en/Student%20Card/ • Register for courses and exams = mandatory! • Deadline to register for courses for block 1A is before the 6th of September • By registering for a course, you are automatically registered for the 1st attempt of the exam / test of the course • For any retake exam / test you need to register separately in OSIRIS. • If you cannot attend during an exam, you also need to de-register in OSIRIS • Check your study results and study progress

Student Information Systems  CANVAS CANVAS (Learning Management System at the UT) • For all information during the course • Course information and course outline (f.e. lecture slides) • See announcements and messages from teachers • Additional course materials • Hand-in options for assignments • Sign up for groups Login to canvas: https://canvas.utwente.nl/ enter the username and password of your ICT account

CANVASaccess to courses from your study program • You first have to register for the course(s) in OSIRIS (before the start of each block) • After that, you will automatically be enrolled in the corresponding course in CANVAS • Registration (in OSIRIS) can be done up until the last day before the start of the block

  19. Student Information Systems  WEBMAIL Webmail / student mail • Important, because any formal communication by the education (from f.e teachers or study-adviser) as well as announcements on Canvas will be send by student e-mail.

  26. Summary of most important information • Enroll for courses through Osiris (= incl. CANVAS) • If necessary, you need to register for retake-tests again separately (just for the test!) in Osiris NOTE: registration period for courses closes at start of the block  registration for (retake) tests is open 40-14 days before the test de-register 1 day latest before the exam, when you decide not to sit the exam! • Max. 2 attempts per course; max. 1 year enrolled in the pre-m COM. • Check your UT-student mail regularly • Visit the COM website: https://www.utwente.nl/en/com/ for important programme information

A checklist about what to do first… • Be sure that your ICT account is up and running • Fill out the pre-master registration form and hand it in at the study adviser (Jeanet Luijerink, Cubicus C-106) • Register for the courses in OSIRIS • Note..! Before end of next week (6th of September!) • After registering for the courses in OSIRIS, check the CANVAS course websites for additional information about the courses. • Check your course roster on MyTimetable • Check your Webmail for new messages • Upload a photo of yourself in OSIRIS to receive your student card • Tip: set www.utwente.nl/students as a favorite in your browser
