  5. Romans 7:24 24 What a wretched man I am! (sin’s depths in me) Who will rescue me from this body (NIV) that is subject to death?  (my body’s wiring for sin)

SURPRISE #1 – Seeing sin-FULL-ness more fully! 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. 13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good to bring about my death, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. (NIV)

  7. So… What is the Problem? Is it the LAW? Law = 10 Commandments?, 10th Command “Do not Covet”? 5 Books of Moses, Torah (OT), the 613 Commandments in the OT? Law of right wrong in Gentile Conscience?

  8. 2 QUICK FIXES… (that will only make the problem WORSE!) The LAWLESSNESS Fix - Exercise your “freedom” (to sin) (popular with some Gentile Believer’s at Rome - “Gnostics”) The LEGALISM Fix – Cut down God’s Laws to fit our small view of “RIGHT beliefs, rules, rituals, group, leader” (popular with some Israelite Believer’s at Rome - ”Judaizers”) …vs. all of life in the JESUS life

  9. IS THERE ANY HELP? YES. In Jesus’ deliverance from sin’s penalty and POWER! 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?  25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

  10. 3 PROMISES FROM JESUS (to defeat the 2 Ro 7 Sin Surprises!!!) As you grow closer to Jesus – he will work in you so that… 1-SIN will become “uninteresting, unattractive, & boring” (worry, fear, rage, gossip, besetting sin, addiction?) 2-OBEDIENCE becomes interesting, attractive, & JOYFUL!” (he is getting us ready to be able NOT to sin!) 3- you will get a NEW HEART (insides) now & very soon… a NEW BODY (outside) like his glorious one! 3

  11. Pop Quiz on Romans 7 Q: How does a Follower of Jesus who has the Law of Jesus’ love written on their heart differ from someone who is lawless or who is a legalist …when driving and seeing a school zone speed sign?

  12. A: They aren’t thinking about a rule to keep or break, they think & feel from their heart about living for the good of all God’s “little ones” who they want to love in Jesus’ name… …as God has loved them!
