  1. Synergies in addressing the Sustainable Development Goals and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets Lisa Janishevski Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity

  2. Synergy is “the interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.”

  3. Benefits of strengthening synergies: • More holistic approach to addressing environment, climate change and development issues • Coherent national position on environment climate change and development issues • Efficient national report preparation • Contributes to the achievement of multiple international obligations • Facilitates the efficient use of human, technical and financial resources • Reducing duplication and redundancy • Improved access to and sharing of data and knowledge • Improved access to funding/other resources

The National Biodiversity Strategy also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Aichi Targets in the following way: • Recognizing the System of Protected Areas and other marine, terrestrial ecosystems and freshwater-aquaculture in the national territory as the main strategy of the Country for adaptation and resilience to climate variability and change (SDG 13, 14 and 15) ….

  7. Examples of institutional arrangements for synergies at the national/regional level: • Informal and/or formal committees for the coordination among NFPs of environment-related conventions, ministerial departments and agencies, and other stakeholders • National GEF committees as mechanisms for NFPs to foster the coherent implementation of the environment-related conventions • National strategy for the implementation of MEAs • Regional initiatives, organizations and strategies

  8. Potential entry points for synergies at the national level: • Sustainable Development Goals: Harmonizing framework for achieving multiple goals. Integration of biodiversity in national sustainable development priorities in cooperation with NAPs • Implementation of ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation (EbA) • National planning activities(e.g. links between UNFCCC NAPs, CBD NBSAPs, and UNCCD NAPs) • Sustainable land management / drought management: links with biodiversity, climate change and land degradation/desertification, relevant to all 3 Rio Conventions • Ecosystem restoration: contributes to biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and mitigation and combating land degradation/desertification, relevant to all 3 Rio Conventions
