Tournament best practices

Tournament ‘Best Practices’

  • Check your tech and supplies before you leave

  • Have a **realistic**strategy for tournament prep

  • Develop and follow a realistic timeline

    • Assignments done 3 days or more before the tournament

    • Updates done by 6p the night before the tournament

  • Maximize your on-site productivity

    • Remember that this is a “business trip”—play time is for **after** you are eliminated

    • “Down time” is “prep time”

    • Keep a “to do” list

    • Scout/watch rounds once you are out

Debate school

Debate & School

  • Homework comes before debate work

  • Keep your teachers informed about potential absences

  • Maintain a long-term calendar that includes both debate-and schoolwork-related information

  • Get ahead of your assignments before you leave for a tournament

  • “Travel time” is “homework time” on the return leg

  • Set aside a “schoolwork day” immediately after you return from a tournament

Pro tips

Pro-Tips

  • Practice makes perfect—DO practice, don’t TALK ABOUT practice

  • Work on debate every day

  • Make your interactions with your coaches purposeful—get information/advice you could not obtain on your own, and PRIORITIZE

  • Do speaking drills EVERY DAY—or at least 5 times a week

  • Watch debates—including your arch-rivals and teams that are better than you, and do so purposefully

  • Focus on your work at hand (multitasking = bad)

  • Maximize efficiency in all debate-related tasks (argument construction, practice, speaking, etc).
