  9. National Projects Report on national projects (website) Partner in charge: UniBo The 47 national projects listed in this deliverable were collected from 32 e-Photon/ONe+ partners from 13 countries Examples UK : OPSNET; OPORON; UPC ; HIPNET;SOAPS [UEssex, UCL.....] DE: MultiTeraNet; eiBone [UST-IKR, TUB] IT: GRID.IT [SSUP] ES: CAPITAL [UPNA] BE: Photons and photonics [FPMs]

  10. Website & Newsletter • Send bi-monthly newsletter (9 altogether) • Aiming at both e-Photon/One partners and outside parties

  11. International Collaborations • Established (and maintained) with major research Groups in USA, Japan, China • Exchange of research staff and joint experiments with China, USA and all ColIaborating Institutes • Sharing of roadmap information [Japan, Korea, China, USA] • Understanding of key strategic future programs in USA, Japan • Understanding of funding situations in different regions • Serving on TPCs for major International conferences (OFC, ECOC, ICC, GLOBECOM.....)

  12. Roadmap on Optical Transport Network Technologies • Growth of digital information 3-160 bGB in 6 years • Many (broadband) networks struggling to support services such • as video (UK) (broadband driving new services) • Look at: • Core: • transmission • switching • control • Access • Focus on system and network aspects (not yet underlying technology • needs) • Discussions with NOBEL, MUSE, PHOSPHOROUS ...... and at • international meetings...

  13. Key Outcomes-Transmission • Move to higher speeds. • Identified signposts for upward move:- • increased deployment of 40 Gbps • standards activity in 100G Ethernet • continued development of router interfaces at and beyond 40 Gbps • reports of field trials by vendors and operators • [eg VERIZON 110 Gbps over 312 miles] • deployment expected in 5 years ??

  14. Key Outcomes –Optical Switching • Optical circuit switching: • Major barriers overcome in manufacturability of scalable cross-connect switches and on standards for optical network layer control. • Switch blocks of 320x320 fibres commercially available (3 suppliers) • Product development on switching systems interconnecting 9 fibre pairs, each carrying 32 channels • Wavelength Selective Switches (using MEMs) being deployed • Optical burst & packet switching: • No (telecoms) standards activities • Issues with network efficiency for burst switching (but some commercial activity) • Technology issues remain for optical packet switching.

  15. Key Outcomes-Access Access: • GE (Gigabit Ethernet)-PON widely deployed in Japan, G (Gigabit)PON in Europe • Extension of GPON standard in 2008 with range extension to 60 km and 128-way split • Long term target eg (PIEMAN) 32 channels x 10Gbps @100 km with split ratio of 1024

  16. BONE: Building the Future Optical Network in Europe • Moving forward: • Build on established international contacts • Extend existing roadmap • Extend dissemination to wider audience-schools • Careful about workshop planning [ICC]

  17. Final Comments • Significant interaction between partners [joint papers, project proposals etc] and EU projects. • e-photon/ONe+ well recognised by major external research groups • seen as open (unlike other major EU projects) • provides a window into EU for [Japan, China, USA] • potential for global activity (eg overarching roadmaps) • All partners are involved in disseminating technical results Solid achievements: Internal collaboration; roadmaps; register of national projects; high-profile international interactions
