  3. Guided Reading • Strategic reading approach that encompasses a variety of skills • Reading levels are developmental and determined by county established benchmark levels

  4. Guided Reading • Reading group books will be brought home nightly to practice fluency. Please be sure to return the book the next day. • Students learn at a different pace; therefore, we continually assess students for flexible grouping.

  5. Components of Reading • Blend-it: a blending of onsets and rimes • Making words • Spelling • Sight words • Fix-up strategies • Fluency • Vocabulary • Comprehension

  6. Words Their WaySpelling - Vocabulary - Word WorkGrade 1

  7. Research has shown that children do not transfer performance on “traditional spelling tests” to everyday writing. Children learn best by active involvement and practice with the task at hand. Words Their Way allows them to see word and letter patterns for themselves.

  8. The Basis for Word Study Word study is developmental Word study follows the continuum of word knowledge. Most students follow the same continuum, but possibly at different rates.

  24. What are the benefits of having a co-taught setting? • Two (or more) heads are better than one • Lower student to teacher ratio • Alternative teaching methods • Individualized attention and instruction • Opportunities to embrace differences
