  1. Welcome to Bio181L! Contemplating the nuts and bolts of Life “It’s atoms all the way down”

  2. About Me! • My name is Sara Carey. • I am Junior and my major is Molecular and Cellular Biology along with Chemistry. • I am very involved in computer programming • I have three adorable nephews

  3. Lil D

  4. Brody

  5. Gage

  6. Notes about 181L • This class will be more about Thinking, Understanding, Investigating, and Evaluating! • Manual pages ix and xi should help! • This class will not coincide with your lectures, but don’t fret! I’m self sufficient. • Office Hours!

  7. Notecard and Account Creation • On your notecard: • Name (and Nickname if you have one) • Major • Year in College • Hobby • Fun Fact • http://blc.arizona.edu/courses/181lab • Click “Create Accounts”

  8. Housekeeping • Absences • Late is absent. Leaving early is absent. • If you HAVE to miss lab you must get it excused by Asya Roberts (BSE109) prior to making it up • If you miss 2 labs, you will be dropped from the course, whether they were excused or not. • Make up will be the same week you miss lab. • Webpage and how it works!

  9. General Policies and Grading • Syllabus • Linked on course homepage • Honors code and Plagiarism (Manual page xiii) • Assignments • On-line assessments/tutorials (10%) • In-class quizzes (15%) • Lab assignments (LABAs--Lab Activity Based Assignments) (50%) • Lab Projects & reports (combine to 25%)

  10. The Tao of Molecules How molecules feel and the world they live in

  11. Atoms • DNA, RNA: C,H,N,O,P, [Mg++] • Carbs: C,H,O • Protein: C,H,N,O, (S),(P) [traces] • Membranes: C,H,N,O,P, (S) • What cannot be done with connections of these atoms cannot be done by living organisms.

  12. Basic Backbone of Atoms • At the start: the number of protons (positively charged particles) equal the number of electrons (negatively charged particles) • Atoms seek complete outer shells. Meaning the outermost electron set should be 8. (Hydrogen and Helium only want 2).

  13. Symbolizing Atoms and Molecules

  14. Coloring up the world

  15. + O H H + - Views of molecules H2O See lab manual, pages 0-3

  16. Interactions with Water StructViewer Time! This can be accessed through Bio181L_Go

  17. We need to talk about a few things... • Salting out: when the addition of salt changes the solubility of other molecules in water? • Why did this happen in our experiment? • Evaporation? • Water vs. Ethanol

  18. Clean Up • Oil Waste in the Hood • Ethanol Waste in the Sink • Anything too messy wadded up and discarded

  19. Homework! • Assessors • 181 Intro ‘12 • Molecular World Tutorial • Vocabulary • Atoms and Molecules • Crossword (both) • Vocabuwary (60,000 pts)
