WHAT IS SATIRE? • Satire—sarcasm, irony or wit used to ridicule or mock (The use of humour as a device to expose flaws in people, literary works, institutions, or society.) • Satirical styles: • 1.  Direct satire is directly stated • 2.  Indirect satire is communicated through characters in a situation • Types of Satire: • 1.  Horatian—light-hearted, intended for fun • 2. Juvenalian—bitter, angry attacking

ELEMENTS OF PLOT • SETTING: The Dimitrich household • PROTAGONIST: Ivan Dimitrich • ANTAGONIST: Wife Masha, the lotto ticket • NARRATOR: Third person omnicient • CONFLICT: -Ivan realizes that his wife is the one who will have all the control of the lotto money and she will not let him enjoy it, family members will also hound them for money (PERSON VS. PERSON) • RESOLUTION: -Finds out they didn’t win after all • THEME: -money as root cause of evil
