IRS Data Retrieval Tool • About the tool: • The IRS tool will be available for online FAFSA submittals beginning February 1st, 2012. • The tool provides FAFSA applicants and parents with the ability to transfer income information from the IRS to FAFSA. • Benefits of the tool: • Complete the FAFSA more easily and accurately! • Applicants can use the tool to update their income information.

Important Information for Early Filers • If your FAFSA application was completed prior to February 1, 2012, in order to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, students and parents must log back on to your FAFSA application and update by the clicking the “Make FAFSA Corrections” link. • *Corrections cannot be submitted online until after the IRS has processed your 2011 tax return. • Electronic filers • Please allow the IRS 2-3 weeks • Paper filers • Please allow the IRS 6-8 weeks

  5. Questions under the “Financial Information” Section used to determine who can use the IRS Tool Under the Financial Information section you will be asked a series of questions to determine whether or not you (or your parents) are eligible to use the tool.

  6. Linking to the IRS web site If you are eligible to use the IRS tool, you will be prompted to: Enter your FAFSA PIN number, then Select “LINK TO IRS”

  7. FAFSA- IRS Data Link Once you are connected to IRS.gov Review your tax information for accuracy. Select the appropriate box below. Select Transfer Now. You will then be returned to the FAFSA web site. Data transfer completed!

Reminders • For 2012-2013 the IRS will be available beginning • February 1st, 2012 • The following circumstances make you ineligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool: • Filed an amended 2011 Federal Tax Return • Will not file a 2011 Federal Tax Return • Are married but filed separately • Are divorced/separated but filing jointly • Filed a foreign tax return (including Puerto Rico)
