  2. Emerging infectious disease Have NOT occurred in humans before Have occurred previously but affected only small number of people Have occurred throughout human history but only recently recognized a disease due to infectious agent

  3. Examples: Disease Contributing Factor Legionnarie Cooling & plumbing systems Gastric ulcer newly recognized as infectious disease in 1983

  4. Re-emerging infectious disease Were once major health problems globally or in particular country, then dramatically declined, but are again becoming health problems for a significant number of the population

  5. Examples: Disease Contributing Factors Tuberculosis Antibiotic resistant pathogens; immunocompromised populations Malaria Drug resistance and fear of vaccination; favorable conditions for mosquito vector
