  1. The Red Necklace. By Ansharah Asif

  2. Quote #1 • “He could see no one, yet he could almost feel her breath like a gentle breeze upon his neck. She was saying, The devil’s own is on your trail, run like the wind.” (Page 6) This quote indicates warning to Yann because they were asked to perform for the Marquis but something or someone is trying to warn him. There are 2 similes in this quote. It’s tone is somewhat suspense, leading to the conflict and then the resolution.

  3. Quote #2 • “Peering out of the frosty carriage window, she could hardly recognize the landscape they were driving through. In the thin, blue. Watery light, figures seemed to rise out of the snow like ghosts, given shape by the rags they were only wearing.” (Page 17) This quote indicates depression to Sido because she is riding in a carriage on her way to meet her “father”, when she sees this. The quote has metaphor and simile. The tone is pity towards the people.

  4. Quote #3 • “Sido followed the valet up a set of cold stone stairs and through a plain wooden door into a long dark corridor. Luc lit one of the candles. It shone a shy light down what seemed a never ending passageway.” (Page 18) This quote indicates suspense and what’s going to happen next. She is now being led to her father. The is a hyperbole in this quote, “never ending passage ways”, is an exaggeration because passages have an ending, eventually. Its tone is somewhat foreshadowing.

  5. Quote #4 • “The essence of Topolain had gone, snuffed out like a candle. (page 44) This quote indicates sadness and the affect of losing a loved one. There is a simile in this quote. Its tone is depression and horror, the mood is somber.

  6. Quote #5 • “The walls were painted with hunting scenes that in the spit and hiss of the firelight appeared to be moving.” This quote describes how walls look and how they seem to Yann. At this point of the story, Yann is looking for an escape and he stumbles upon The Counts room. There is personification in this quote because the painting on a wall cannot actually move. There’s suspense about what Yann might do next and there’s detailed description of the walls. (Page 53)

  7. Quote #6 • “All objects great and small, have a spirit. Sometimes if you listen carefully you can almost hear the sound they make.” This quote describes what Yann personally thinks toward spirits and objects. This quote has personification because you cant really hear objects make sounds. At this point of the story, Yann is stealing money and the red necklace from The Count’s room.

  8. Quote #7 • “Dead! Repeated Monsieur Aulard. Dead? Not Topolain, he was larger than life! (page 70) At this point in the story Tetu and Yann have safeley got back to Paris and are speaking with their old friend, and telling them the news about Topolain. This quote describes astonishment, and by his tone and voice, it seems like he is hearing something that he doesn’t want to believe. There is a metaphor in this quote, because he compares Topolain to life.

  9. Quote #8 • “A bullet, said Tetu, his face collapsing as tears appeared in his watery red eyes. He was shot like a dog.” (page 70) At this point of the story, Tetu is explaining to his friend that it wasn’t an accident that Topolain got killed, it was on purpose. There is a simile in this quote, (he was shot like a dog.) The tone and mood is depression, sadness, and regret.

  10. Quote #9 • “ The noise the man had made was enough to wake the dead! (page 264) At this point of the story, Sido and her “father” have been arrived as prisoners for Mr.Tull. There is a hyperbole in this quote because you cant wake the dead by some noise. The tone and mood is tense and full of suspense for what’s going to happen next.

  11. Quote #10 • “He had shaken her like a doll, felt the flutter of her heart beneath his hand. (Page 327) At this point of the story, The Count remembers the love he felt for Anis which he now realizes was Yann’s mom. The mood and tone is full of regret and realization. There is a simile in the quote (shaken her like a doll.)
