  2. Focus Questions 1. Who founded Detroit? 2. Why the name Detroit? 3.Why was it built where it is? 4.Would I like to live in Detroit when it was founded?

  3. 2.Who founded Detroit? Detroit was founded on July 24, 1701, by Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac along with 51 additional Frenchmen coming from Montreal; ready to make the stronghold. Cadillac already had the route planned to avoid unwanted Indian encounters.

  4. 1.Why the name Detroit? Cadillac choose the narrowest part of the river, where the banks were high, there he and his men began construction of Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit. Detroit is the French word for “straits” referring to the narrow passage upon which the fort was built. Ponchartrain was the French Minister of Marine, hence an appropriate name for the settlement.

  5. 3.Why was Detroit built where it is? The location was perfect because of the strategic position it offered on the strait. • It would be a great fur trade post • Plus it was a great waterway for trade in and out of the Great Lakes. • It would be easy to defend against A British invasion Canada Detroit

  6. 4.Would I like to live in Detroit when it was founded? • YES, YES, YES • I would like to live there because France offered free land to attract families to Detroit. Detroit soon became the largest city between Montreal and New Orleans • I would also be able to travel easily between Canada and the U.S. • It would be a good place to live because supplies and provisions would be readily available • I would be able to earn a living by trading fur with the Indians.
