Things to do BEFORE the conference • Have students rate themselves • Ask parents for concerns to discuss • Prepare an outline that keeps you on track – then send home with the parent to share with a spouse/parent not present/school website/your contact information • Post conference schedule/sign for parents to knock when it’s their time • Set up a waiting area outside with student work displayed • Use a timer – You’d never guess it, but some parents will monopolize your time

Things to do/say DURING the conference • Always keep close proximity – to their side, never between you and a table • Eye contact is key • Begin and end with a positive – Use PNP – positive/negative/positive sandwich approach • Ask parent what works at home • Have a notebook handy of things you need to follow-up on

  5. Things to do AFTER the conference • Follow up on any post- conferences you need to set up • Follow up on any documentation/scores/etc. for the parents • Notify the office of any no-shows at the end of the week!
