  1. Concept Map Grade 7 Unit 5 • Enduring understandings • A dilation is a transformation that changes the size of a figure, but not the shape. • If the scale factor of a dilation is greater than 1, the image will be enlarged; if it is less than 1, the image will be reduced; and if the scale factor = 1, the image will be congruent to the preimage. • Two shapes are similar if the lengths of corresponding sides are proportional and all corresponding angles are congruent. • Two similar figures are related by a scale factor. • Scale factors, length ratios, and area ratios may be used to determine missing sides or areas in similar figures. • Congruent figures have the same size and the same shape. Assessment Launch activities Quizzes Observations Practice work Tasks Closure activities Journal entries Culminating project Tests Could Giants Really Exist? Are any of the rectangles on this poster similar? How do you know? • Concept M7G3bSimilar figures are related through scale factorLesson EQ’s -How can I represent the relationship between similar figures? • How are areas of similar figures related? • How can I find missing side lengths and area of similar figures? • Vocabulary scale factor • ConceptM7G2Dilations produce similar figures. • Lesson EQ’s-How does a dilation affect a figure in the coordinate plane? • When will a dilation produce an enlargement? A reduction? A congruent figure? • Vocabulary dilation congruent ConceptsM7G3a,c In similar figures, corresponding angles are congruent and corresponding sides are proportional. Congruent figures are similar. Lesson EQ’s -When are similar figures congruent? -How can I tell if two figures are similar?
