Institute for the Application of Geospatial Technology (IAGT) • Focus on the integration of GIS into education environments • IAGT’s School Power Naturally Project • Developing Wind and Solar lessons using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) • Lessons focused for grades 7-10 • Use existing Performance Data (solar only)

  6. Four GIS Lessons: • Energy Overview What is our current Energy Consumption as a nation? 2. Solar What is the solar potential for my school and home? 3. Wind What are characteristics of existing wind farms? What wind resources are in your community?

  8. Web-Based Exercises • ESRI ArcGIS Server • Data stored in a File Geodatabase • 3 Services (mxd’s) to allow the layering and functionality wanted • ESRI Online Background Map & Imagery

  9. Web-Based Exercises • ESRI ArcGIS Server Caching • All raster data was cached • Significant improvement in response time • 15 Scale Levels for each layer • Millions of PNG images created • Approx. 4 Gb of disk space for each layer
