  2. Agenda Opening • Learning Targets • Connecting “The Hero’s Journey” and The Lightning Thief: Carousel of Quotes (10min) Work Time • Selecting Evidence: Aligning Percy’s Experiences with the Hero’s Journey (15min) • Partner Writing: Using Evidence from Two Texts (10min) Closing • Reflecting on Learning Targets Homework • Draft read of Chapter 6

  3. Today’s Learning Targets • I can explain the relationship between a quote from The Lightning Thief and a quote from “The Hero’s Journey” • I can select evidence from “The Hero’s Journey” that aligns with The Lightning Thief • I can write a paragraph (with a partner) to describe how excerpts in The Lightning Thief align to “The Hero’s Journey,’ citing evidence from both texts.”

  4. Connecting “The Hero’s Journey” and The Lightning Thief • Working in your triads you will… Think Pair Share When you think about THJ and TLT, how do you think these two texts are related?

  5. Carousel of Quotes *First, you will independently and silently read quotes on your chart *Think about their relationship to yourself *Jot down your thoughts about how they connect Next… you will go to englishreading.wordpress.com

  6. Example of 2 Quotes QUOTE FROM THE LIGHTNING THIEF “I have dyslexia and attention deficit disorder and I had never made above a C- in my life.” QUOTE FROM “THE HERO’S JOURNEY” “Heroes possess some ability or characteristic that makes them feel out-of-place.” EXPLAIN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE TWO QUOTES These quotes are related because Percy has characteristics that make him feel out of place, and this a challenge many heroes face.

  7. Around the Blog… You will see the same quotes from your recording form on the blog • At each blog post, let a different memberof your triad read the two quotes aloud • Give each person a chance to share their thinking from the recording forms • Discuss the relationship between these quotes • Write the relationship on the reply section of the post

  8. Question… What is the most important connection between Percy’s experiences and “The Hero’s Journey”? Why?

  9. Selecting Evidence Directions • Read the excerpt from The Lightning Thief. • Think- Does this excerpt align with the archetype of “The Hero’s Journey”? • Go back to “The Hero’s Journey” to confirm you thinking and gather evidence. • Share and Discuss with your triad • Write in the stage of “The Hero’s Journey” and a quote from “The Hero’s Journey” as your evidence. LET’S SEE AN EXAMPLE

  10. Example

  11. Partner WritingUsing Evidence from Two Texts • Turn this question into a claim: How do Percy’s experiences align with the hero’s journey? Percy from The Lightning Thief experiences align with the hero’s journey. Percy’s experiences align with “The Hero’s Journey.” Think Pair Share- What would be a good example of a topic sentence now that you know what you will be writing about?

  12. Criteria for writing a strong paragraph… Did you… • Begin your paragraph with a topic sentence that makes a claim? • Use evidence from The Lightning Thief that supports your claim? • Use evidence from “The Hero’s Journey” that supports your claim? • Make it clear how the quotes are connected? • Close the paragraph with a clear concluding statement?

  13. Partner Writing Directions • With your partner, review the model paragraph (Writing with Evidence from two texts) from lesson 8 • Together, choose one stage of the hero’s journey from the Selecting Evidence recording form that you want to use in your writing. • On your own, draft a paragraph using evidence from both texts. • After finishing the paragraph, trade papers. Did your partner meet the criteria?

  14. PEEL: point, evidence, explain, link

  15. Model Paragraph • Percy Jackson, the main character in The Lightning Thief, is following the path of the hero in “The Hero’s Journey.” Percy Jackson is a boy who is not accepted by many people around him.  In “The Hero’s Journey” it says that heroes “possess some ability or characteristic that makes them feel out-of-place.” In The Lightning Thief, Percy says, “I have dyslexia and attention deficit disorder and I had never made about a C- in my life.”  In this quote, Percy expresses his feelings of exclusion because of his learning differences.  This shows that Percy is like the archetype of a hero because he also has characteristics that make him feel out of place.

  16. Closing • Learning Target reflection- Fist Five I can write a paragraph (with a partner) to describe how excerpts in The Lightning Thief align to “The Hero’s Journey,’ citing evidence from both texts.” Fist- I found this target to be difficult Five-I understood and feel I accomplished this target Three- I found this somewhat difficult but I'm getting there.

  17. Homework First draft read of Chapter 6: “I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom”
