  1. Introduction • Hook (1-2 sentences) • Explanation of topic (1-3 sentences) • Claim/Main Idea (1 sentence) It is said that good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment.Being someone others can lean on often means shinning when others shrink, being courageous when others cower, and sometimes making what many would consider bad judgment. One characteristic that the third little pig and Goldilocks had that allows others to lean on them was risk-taking.

  2. Note Taking

  3. Body • Topic sentence (1 sentence) • Quote(s) (1-3 sentences) • Explanation (1-3 sentences) • Closing (1 sentence) In the story “The Three Little Pigs”, the third little pig was a reliable brother because he was a risk taker. “Not by the hairs on my chinny, chin, chin,” the third little pig announced as the blood thirsty wolf attempted to blow his house down (70). This act of bravery and risk taking proved that his other brothers could lean on him for support when danger arrived in the form of a wolf.Because he threw caution to the wind and made a questionable judgment call, the wolf could not dine on his brothers or him. As you can see, the third bold little pig stood his ground in the face of death and is definitely someone others can count on.

  4. Closing • Restate the claim (1-2 sentences) • Apply to life--Go beyond the characters/stories—What lesson did you learn? (2-3 sentences) Risk taking is an underutilized skill. When confronted with peril, many people choose the safe path as opposed to the road less traveled. However, the people who stand up in the face of danger and take risks prove to be reliable in difficult situations. It is said that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. In order to have others look to a person as someone they can lean on, they must believe that person will perform their best when others are at their worst.
