  1. Standard Grade PE The body: SPEED REACTION TIME WARM UP & COOL DOWN

  2. Learning Outcomes • Pupils will learn the definition of Speed • Pupils will be able to name a test to measure speed • Pupils will be able to describe factors which could affect how fast you can run • Pupils will be able to describe skills which require speed in team & individual activities • Pupils will learn about reaction time and it’s importance in team and individual activities. • Pupils will learn about the phases of a warm up and their importance.

  3. What is Speed? • Speed is the ability of the whole body or part of the body to move very quickly from point A to point B in the shortest possible time.

  4. Test to measure speed..... • 100m sprint timed 100m

  5. What factors could affect how fast you run? • The frequency and number of strides taken. • The wind resistance • The wind at your back (remember world records in athletics only count if the wind stays below a set level.) • The equipment you are wearing e.g. spikes • The range of flexibility in your joints ankles/hips/shoulders • The speed at which the arms/ legs move

  6. Some activities may only require speed in a part of your body...... Smash in badminton Arm Speed Football Strike Leg Speed Whole Body Speed 100m Sprint

  7. Arm, Leg or Whole Body??? • Whole Body Speed • Whole Body Speed • Arm Speed • Leg Speed • Leg Speed • Arm Speed • Whole Body Speed • Football winger • 100m sprint • Netball toss up • Basketball jump ball • Football shooting • Badminton smash • Gymnast vaulting

  8. How can speed help your performance? • Individual activity: When performing a headspring vault in gymnastics, the run up requires speed. I needed to accelerate quickly to take off and gain flight in my vault. • Team activity: In netball, I used my whole body speed to sprint quickly to get to a lose ball to gain possession for my team

  9. Reaction Time What is reaction time? • The time it takes for a performer to react to an identified stimulus. http://www.topendsports.com/testing/reaction-timer.htm

  10. What might you react to in an activity? What might you react to in an activity? • Starters gun • Referees whistle • Opponent • Ball • Shuttle

  11. Why Important? • Team activity: In netball, when the referee called for a toss up, I needed quick reactions in order to snatch the ball quickly before my opponent to gain possession for my team.

  12. Why Important? • Individual activity: In badminton, my opponent looked as though they were going to low serve. At the last minute they flick served, sending the shuttle to the back of the service box. Having good reactions enabled me to respond quickly to this shot and get behind the shuttle to play an attacking smash.

  13. Warm up – Phase one Gentle Jogging / Pulse Raiser Why? • Raises the body temperature & heart rate which helps to warm the muscles. • Muscles react and contract faster when they are warm. • Increases the blood supply to the working muscles (more oxygen getting to the working muscles)

  14. Warm Up – Phase two Stretching Why? • Reduces the risk of injury • Stretches the muscles, making them longer and more flexible (increases the elasticity of the muscles) • The range of movement around a joint is increased.

  15. Warm up – Phase three Skill Related Why? • Get the specific muscles ready which will be working in the game. • Get used to the surface/conditions / court • To mentally prepare/get in the zone

  16. Cool Down What? • Jog Slowly & Stretch Why? • The blood can get rid of all the waste from the working muscles • This waste is called Lactic acid and builds up in your muscles if you have been working for a long time. • If you don’t cool-down this will result in stiffness and soreness of your muscles.
