  10. Brief History of Lithuania In 1386, Lithuania and Poland united After defeating the Teutonic Knights at Tannenberg, they formed one of the largest empires in Medieval Europe. Because Poland was partitioned by Russia, Prussia and Austria, Lithuania came under Russian rule Then after World War 1, when Russia collapsed, Lithuania declared it’s independence Lithuania became part of the Soviet Union in 1940

Brief History of Lithuania Lithuania became part of the Soviet Union in 1940 Lithuanian soldiers were forced to fight in World War 2 with Germany after Hitler invaded it Approximately 240,000 Lithuanian Jews were killed in Lithuania by the Nazis The Lithuanian independence movement re-emerged in 1988 Lithuania was given full independence after the supreme council rejected Soviet rule and then declared their independence Lithuania joined the EU and NATO in 2004
