  3. The Golden Box/Sacred Ark Size: 2 ½ x1 ½ x 1 ½ cubits At 18” = 45” x 27” x 27” Acacia wood o’er laid with gold Gold rim, staves on side, rings at feet Mercy seat on top with 2 cherubim Bezalel constructed – Exodus 35, 37

  4. Placed in the ark: pot of manna – Exodus 16:33-34 Aaron’s rod – Numbers 17:10 2 tables of 10 commandments – Deuteronomy 31:26 By Solomon’s time only tables of stone 1 Kings 8:9

  5. Use of the Golden Box • Carried before the camp of Israel in moves - Num. 10:33; Josh. 3:6 • Present sometimes in war – 1 Sam. 4:4-5 • Place of inquiry – Josh 7:6-9 • Signified God’s presence, communion, and revelation – Ex. 25:22; Num. 7:89

  6. Adventures of the Golden Box • Divides the Jordan – Josh 3:14-17 • Led Israel in journeys – Num. 10 • Carried around Jericho – Josh. 6 • Lost to Philistines – 1 Sam. 4 • At Ashdod disrupts Dagon – 1 Sam. 5 • Moved to Gath, Ekron – 1 Sam. 5 where God sent tumors

  7. Stayed 7 months among Philistines • Restored to Israel by 2 milk cows with calves, never yoked – 1 Sam. 6:1-18 • Came to Beth-shemesh, 50,070 men smitten for looking inside • 20 years at Kiriath-jearim – 1 Sam. 7 in the house of Abinidab, with son Eleazar sanctified as priest

  8. David’s foolish attempt – 2 Sam. 6 where Uzzah died. • 3 months in the house of Obed-edom - 2 Sam. 6 • Brought to Jerusalem properly by David, shoulders of Levites – 2 Sam. 6 • David confessed “not according to the ordinance” – 1 Chron. 15:13

  9. Solomon put the golden ark in the temple – 1 Kings 8 • In an “oracle” of gold – 1 Kings 6 • Holy of Holies - 20’ x 20’ x 20’ • Golden chains, 2 cherubim of olive wood o’er laid with gold, 10 cubits high, 5 cubit wings wall to wall

  10. Conclusion • What happened to the Golden Box? • Josiah, 640 B. C., restored temple and put the ark in it – 2 Chron. 25:3 • Temple was destroyed in 587 B. C. by Nebuzaradan, general of Nebuchadnezzar – 2 Kings 25 • Built in 1490 B. C. – lasted 900 years?

  11. God’s Presence in the N. T. • The Church is God’s Temple – 1 Cor. 3:16-17 • Christians put together into a temple, the habitation of God – Eph. 2:21 • Christians as living stones built up into a spiritual house – 1 Peter 2:5

  12. In the O. T. God instructed a certain respect in preparation, behavior, and dress. • What does one suppose pleases God today when Christians come together as the “Holy Temple”? • Anything less?
