  1. U.S. GOVERNMENT VOCABULARY

  2. 1.government-the complex of political institutions, laws, and customs through which the function of governing is carried out. • 2.constitution-a formal plan of government. • 3.republic-a government in which citizens rule through elected representatives. • 4.democracy-government by the people/rule of the majority, govern themselves.

  3. 5.popular sovereignty-government by the will of the people/let the people choose. • 6.petition-a formal request of the government by the people. • 7.confederation-a league that has mutual support or common action ,alliance. • 8.federalism-the sharing of powers between federal and state governments.

  4. 9.Declaration of Independence- the document that declared the 13 colonies independent from England July 4th 1776. • 10.Articles of Confederation-the first constitution of the United States. • 11.United States Constitution-the second constitution of the United States, written at the constitutional convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1787.

  5. 12.Constitution Convention-In 1787, 55 delegates from the 13 states met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to rewrite the Articles of Confederation, which became know as the United States Constitution that we have today. • 13.amendment-an addition to a formal document such as the Constitution. • 14.unalienable rights- rights that can not be taken away without due process of law.

  6. 15.Bill of Rights- the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution describing individual rights for it's citizens. • 16.Preamble of the U.S.Constitution- is a mission statement of the 6 major points or goals of the U.S. Constitution.

  8. 17.legistative branch- makes the laws. • 18.executive branch-carries out the laws. • 19.judicial branch-makes sure laws are constitutional. • 20.bill- laws that are in the making. • 21.law- are bills that have met approval and are now enforced by the government. • 22.veto- are where the president can cancel a bill (a law to be) if he does not like it. • 23.impeach- when a government official is removed from office on the grounds of acting unconstitutional.

House of Representatives- elected officials from the states based on the population, they have a term of 2 years. • 25.Senate- elected officials from the states based on equal representation, each state gets two with a term of six years. • 26.congress- the combined legislative bodies of the Senate and House of Representatives.

  10. 27.Supreme Court-the highest court in the U.S. interprets the law as being constitutional or not. Consist of 9 judges. • 28.checks and balances- a term use to describe how each branch of our government has certain powers and ways of keeping anyone branch from becoming more powerful than the other.
