Machine Gun

  • Invented by US 1862 for Civil War

  • Took 4-6 men to operate

  • Very Heavy

  • Fired 400-600 rounds

  • Most devastating weapon WWI


Tank

  • Invented by British

  • Get through No Man’s Land

  • Only went 3 mph

  • Made of Steel

  • Becomes a natural shield for troops to walk behind


Bayonets

  • Bayonne, France in 1600s

  • Knife end of rifle

  • Germans made it serrated.


Cannons

  • British

  • Get ground mobile cannons during WWI

  • Germans make Big Bertha named after a wife

    -Weighed 175 tons, heavy

    -Flipped when fired so put on railroad track

    -Major destruction!


Flame Thrower

  • German

  • Shoots Fire

  • There was a small portable model. Sometimes the container holding kerosene would leak causing holder to catch fire.

  • Second one was better and shot longer and further.

  • Used a lot of fuel!


Gases

  • French first to use tear gas in war.

  • Chemical gases were used by Germans

    3 Main Types:

  • Chlorine Gas:

    Suffocates you-shuts down lungs and throat.

    B. Phosgene:

    Similar to chlorine but choke to death on own mucus-usually die in 2 days.

    C. Mustard:

    An irritant which blisters you internally and externally.

    D. Gas masks are invented during WWI.


Effect?

  • War of Attrition:

    -you wear down the enemy physically and mentally

  • Shell Shock:

    -psychological damage from war

  • Invention of prosthetics (fake limbs)


Planes

  • 1904 Wright Brothers, The Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

  • Made wood and canvas

  • Planes had to get low to ground to drop bomb

  • Very dangerous

  • Used mainly for supplies

  • By end of war used more for bombing


The Red Baron!

  • Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918) was a German fighter pilot known as the "Red Baron". He was the most successful flying ace during World War I, being officially credited with 80 confirmed air combat victories.
