  7. Scale of ResearchEscala de la Investigación • Gulf of California • Golfo de California • Use Yaqui Valley as a model system to demonstrate concepts of EBM.

  8. Scale of ResearchEscala de la Investigación • Lessons learned from YV should be broadly relevant for other parts of the Gulf and for other coastal regions of the world.

  9. Two Step ProcessProceso de Dos Etapas • Planning grant (July-August, 2004), $25K • Donación para la planeación (Julio-Agosto, 2004), $25K • Implementation grant (September 3, 2004) • Two-year grant ($300K/year) • Very competitive • Selection of grantees in December, 2004 • Donación para la implementación (Septiembre 3, 2004).

  10. Planning GrantDonación para la Planeación • Land-Sea interface: how activities on land can affect ecosystems in the Gulf of California.

  11. Planning GrantDonación para la Planeación • Nitrogen use and loss from agriculture, livestock, aquaculture, urban growth.

  12. Recasting the Research QuestionsReformar las Preguntas deInvestigación • Recast research questions to include a broader set of concerns related to sustainability and wellbeing in the Yaqui Valley • Reformar laspreguntas deinvestigación incluyir un conjunto amplio de preocupaciones relado a sustentabilidad y bienestar en el Valle de Yaqui • Water use efficiency • Rendimiento en el uso de agua

  13. Recasting the Research QuestionsReformar las Preguntas deInvestigación • Group decision to focus to a large extent on water conservation and its roles both in enhancing the sustainability of agriculture and in reducing fluxes of nutrients and pollutants to the Gulf.

  14. Recasting the Research QuestionsReformar las Preguntas deInvestigación • Fertilizer use efficiency; diagnostic tools • Rendimiento en el uso de fertilizante; herramientas diagnósticas • Livestock waste treatment • tratamiento del residuo producción pecuaria • Measuring and monitoring activities • Actividades medir y monitorización

  15. Research Goal 1Meta de Investigación 1 • To identify and measure the sources and fluxes of organic and chemical pollution flowing out of the drainage canals from agriculture, livestock, aquaculture, and human population centers.

  16. Research Goal 2Meta de Investigación 2 • To initiate a series of participatory field trials on irrigation and fertilizer efficiency, and on water and waste treatment in livestock operations.

  17. Research Goal 3Meta de Investigación 3 • To conduct a study of climate dynamics in the region, which will be shared both with the central irrigation authority and with state and regional planners • Conducir un estudio de los dinámicos climáticos en el region cual compartiría con el autoridad centro de riego and con las proyectistas de estado y regional.

  18. Research Goal 4Meta de Investigación 4 • To conduct economic and policy analyses on the incentives and disincentives of input use efficiency, pollution control, crop choice and technology adoption, which will be shared with political leaders in the region.

  19. Research Goal 5Meta de Investigación 5 • To monitor eutrophication in the Gulf of California originating from YV and collaborate with WWF-Mexico to begin assessments of its impact on marine ecosystems and aquatic species.

  20. Research Goal 6Meta de Investigación 6 • To engage farmers, policymakers, NGOs, and local communities in defining research outputs.
