  2. What is a Multi Genre Research Paper? • • "A multi-genre paper arises from research, experience, and imagination. It is not an uninterrupted, expository monologue nor a seamless narrative nor a collection of poems. A multi-genre paper is composed of many genres and subgenres, each piece self-contained, making a point of its own, yet connected by theme or topic and sometimes by language, images, and content. In addition to many genres, a multi-genre paper may also contain many voices, not just the author's. The trick is to make such a paper hang together.” • (Romano, Blending Genre, Altering Style)

  5. The Assignment Process…Step 1 • 1. Pick a topic from Persepolis, or the time period of the Islamic Revolution to current issues in Iran today, that interests you. Narrow it down and create a guiding research question. Example Topic: U.S. relations with Iran and the Middle East. Question: Why do the U.S. and the fundamentalists of Iran view one another as terrorists?

  6. The Assignment Process… Step 2 • 2. Start researching your topic. You want to find information that highlights what you think you want to say or that gives you a starting point. You may choose to do a project that is informative (i.e. states the facts, but is trying to answer some sort of research question) or you may choose to do a project that is persuasive in nature (i.e. it is still researched, but it has a more obvious bias).

  7. The Assignment Process … Step 3 • 3. Begin to put your research into different genres. Your topic will lend itself to specific genres. For example, if I were to write about the reasons why people abandon their faith, I might use dialogues, news stories, journal entries, a qualities poem or another creative genre to present some of the information about the issue.

Minimum Requirements • Page 1: Title Page • Page 2: Table of Contents • Page 3: Dear Reader Letter: Introduction to your project • Page 4: Expository Essay (3pages) • Page 5: Poem for two voices • Page 6: Qualities Poem • Page 7: Creative Assignment of YOUR Choice! • i.e. filmed dance, short skit, song, visual image (drawing) • Page 8: Works Cited

  9. What makes a STRONG Multi-Genre Paper? • • Clear theme that is maintained in each piece • • Shows understanding of the genres • • Well written and researched Expository Essay • • Creativity • • Effort
