    14. 14 The Algarve was an isolated region until about half a century ago, for its intrinsic natural conditions. Between 1979 and 1987 the lodging capacity increased from 5000 beds to 25 000 (Portugal doubled its market share of international tourist arrivals – 15th place in the world ranking). From that point onward, the model of tourist development has been based in the product “Sun and Sea”, associated to mass tourism. In the 1980 the growth of tourist demand and mass tourism started to get the attention of the national and international press. Dependence of generating markets and products, seasonality. 5. 30. 30 At a global level we see a reinforcement of the Third Sector role along the last decade. The tourism (as an industry) is in transition. Both business tourists and leisure tourists are more sophisticated, seeking personalized experiences. Despite this, in Algarve, there still seems to be a long way to go, regarding the implementation of an effective joint policy between Tourism and Third Sector. 6. Final Remarks

    31. 31 Recognition of tourism as an important economic activity to the region (by the Third Sector leaders) It is also to be registered a predisposition for a more active participation in the Tourism planning These associations do not integrate international and national networks related to the tourism. The Third Sector in the Algarve region is not a major employer and does not engage many volunteers Future Challenges: Need to clarify the Third Sector role regarding tourism development. Need to communicate the value of the sector (to governments, businesses) and also to the general public. 6. Final Remarks

    32. 32 The present study was assumed as an exploratory investigation. Second phase the research will focus on: the Tourism Sector perspective regarding the Third Sector and its role in Tourism (Algarve region); A quantitative assessment of the size, scope of the region Third Sector organisations (budget, non-profit revenues and expenditures, contribution to the region).
