  1. Journalism/ Newswriting 5th Hour Ms. Roller

  2. My History- I have written for • The Collegian college newspaper at CSU Ft. Collins • The Fort Collins Weekly in Fort Collins where I completed my internship. • & The Colorado Springs Independentnewspapers. • See link below to view some articles (online) I have written. http://www.csindy.com/coloradosprings/ArticleArchives?keywords=Christina+Roller&sa=Search

  3. Types of Journalism • Books • Magazines • Newspapers • Broadcast (news, radio, etc.) • INTERNET!!! • Basically anything we want to know is literally at our fingertips today. (Actual newspaper readers are declining)

  4. World Wide Web or www. • The World Wide Web, a network of Internet websites, was developed in 1993. SO… a lot has changed in the past 20 years!!! Source: http://hnn.us/articles/when-was-internet-invented

  5. Newswriting is still important • They say to write at a fifth grade level when newswriting. • Goes back to the old adage, “less is more.” • Essentially you are simplifying events for your readers and telling them the 5 Ws… of an event. • Who, What, When, Where, and Why?

  6. Reporting • When reporting on an event you want to make sure the event is… • 1.) Relevant- the readers must care about the event and will only read the report if it effects them in some way. • 2.) Timely- the event must be a recent event, or something that is upcoming. • 3.) Accurate- The events must be reported correctly. People do not like getting false information and often feel “duped” if it is inaccurate. • 4.) Concise- once again, “less is more.” Most readers won’t read past the first paragraph, so you want to give the 5 Ws in the least amount of words possible. • 5.) Lively- In order to get your readers interested, use words that spice up your writing. A thesaurus comes in handy for this! • Really you should minimize adjectives and use active verbs. For example don’t say, “He went across the basketball court and took the ball from the other player.” Instead you could say, “He dashed across the basketball court and secured the ball from the other player.”

  7. Photography Pictures are extremely important because they are usually what draw people into the story. http://gazette.com/gallery/1761/pictures/289065?display=mobile&thumbs=true http://gazette.com/gallery/1774/pictures/292676

  8. Broadcast • http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/body-recovered-from-mudslide-in-manitou-springs • Broadcast from Saturday, August 10, 2013 covering flood in Manitou on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013. • HUMAN INTEREST • People are interested in other people. • (Source: ABC 7 News/ thedenverchannel.com

  9. Class Project due at end of Quarter • One comprehensive project from each of you… • It may consist of one of the following… • News report • Photo portfolio • Video Broadcast • Powerpoint project • Narrative Journal • A project of your choosing *NOTE: All ideas must be approved by me before they are started. I will give you class time to work on them. Deadline for ideas is Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013.

  10. What will we be doing in this class? • I will be giving you all a lot of freedom to be creative. • Ideally, I would like to have one complete project from each of you. • Also develop a newsletter with a few events reported on each month, including pictures. (In paper form and possibly online.) • My goal will be to produce a seasonal newsletter. So the first one will ideally be produced by the end of October for a Fall issue.
