  1. Welcome to Second Grade Open House! Tara Chandler Angela Mullins Jeanette Gonzalez Jenna Rachunek Michelle Mosley Annette Bieda

  2. Social Contracts • Established by each class • The students make the rules • All the students sign the contracts

  3. Conduct • Each child’s daily conduct will be recorded in his or her agenda. • Please check your child’s conduct color each day and initial the box. • Green – awesome day • Blue- warning, noted in agenda • Yellow- loss of recess time • Orange-loss of recess time and a phone call home. • Red-loss of recess, a phone call home, and a write up.

  4. Communication • Wednesday folders will be sent home every Wednesday • Agendas will communicate conduct and homework assignments daily • Homework assignment will be located in homework folders • Agendas need to be signed every day • Our conference period is from 8:50-9:35 • Please send notes, call, or e-mail if there are any questions or concerns! • Please send notes or call the front office for transportation changes or contact office prior to 2 pm • Do not leave transportation changes on e-mail or voicemail

  5. Parent Information • As of Tuesday, September 6, 2011 students can no longer be escorted into the building by a parent.

  6. Daily Instruction • Reading • Spelling/Language • Composition • Science • Math • Social Studies

  7. Reading • DRA, TPRI, and Running Records will be used to assess text levels. • DRA is NO longer included in averages • Lamar CISD has determined expected text levels for each nine weeks. • students will be keeping a reading journal that will have vocabulary, notes or strategies from that days lesson and examples. Students are allowed to take home notebook and bring them back to school • UNWRAP strategies will be taught starting the 2nd 9 weeks, each day and expected to be used any reading comprehension passage. A template will be given to students and placed in homework folder

  8. Accelerated Reader • It is a motivational reading tool for readers in grades 2-5 • It has grade level appropriate goals for each 9 weeks set by the Librarian. • Readers can earn points by taking a quiz on the computer after reading an AR book. • Points grant them admission to participate in the AR event for that 9 weeks. • More information will be coming on the Library website. • For immediate questions contact Tiffani Smith, Librarian at tsmith@lcisd.org.

  9. Language Arts/ Composition • Writing is 40% • Oral and Written Conventions is 30% Grammar Handwriting Capitalization Punctuation • Spelling is 10% • Research is 10% • Oral Speaking /Listening is 10%

  10. Re-Teach/Reassessment • When a child does not show mastery of a skill on that skill will be re-taught and re-assessed. • The highest grade that the child could receive on the re-teach or reassessment will be 70. • Only given one reasonable opportunity to reassess failure.

  12. 2nd Grade Homework Policy • Reading • District requires reading a minimum of 80 minutes a week. Please write the title of the book in agenda and sign nightly to show 20 minutes of reading. • Reading homework will be sent home Monday-Thursday nights. • Spelling • Pre-Test Mondays & Spelling homework on Monday-Thursday • Advanced lists will be given to students who make a 90 or above. • TEST Friday • Final grade will be the higher of the two grades. • Spelling homework is grid in homework folder

Homework • Math • Will be a review of a skill being taught • Monday-Thursday night • students will be keeping a math notebook that will have vocabulary, notes or strategies from that days lesson and examples. Students are allowed to take home notebook and bring them back to school • word problems will be given to students throughout the year and strategies are expected to be used • UNWRAP strategies and EPSE problem solving strategy will be taught each day and expected to be used on word problems. A template will be given to students and placed in homework folder Language • 1 poem will be sent home to be memorized/9 weeks • The students will have 2 full weeks to learn the poem • It is a listening & a speaking grade • ALL HOMEWORK IS DUE DAILY! • It is a color change if homework is not turned in.

  15. Uniform Dress • Shirts-Red, Navy, White, & Yellow collared shirts may be worn. Spirit shirts may also be worn any day. • Pants-Khaki or Navy • Jeans-Black or Denim • Jackets need to be in dress code and need to be solid colors with no decorations. • No colored stitching/decoration on jeans. • No sweatpants • No wheels or backless shoes.

  16. Parent Volunteers • We are always looking for workroom volunteers or class parents. Speak with your teacher for further information. • Chaperones are always welcome on Field Trips.

Wish List • Tara Chandler – Treasure Chest items, germ X, Clipboards, Colored expo markers, board games • Angela Mullins – hand sanitizer clipboards, grade appropriate books for our class library (gently used), and dry erase markers • Jenna Rachunek – treasure chest items, dry erase markers, small kids black socks, board games, grade appropriate books for our class library (gently used) • Jeanette Gonzalez – Ear Buds for iPods, Hand Sanitizer, Clipboards, Glues sticks • Michelle Mosley – Expo markers, Smelly stickers, iTunes gift cards for LCISD technology, Clorox wipes, Germ ex, Treasure box items, Copy paper, Ear buds for iPads and i touches, glue sticks, and clipboards • Annette Bieda – hand sanitizer

  18. Misc… • Students may begin to arrive at 7:00 a.m. Student supervision is not provided prior to 7 a.m. Parents, please do not bring your child to their classroom in the morning or drop them off in the back of the building. • Students are to go to the Gym or Cafeteria prior to 7:30 a.m. • Students are tardy after 7:45 a.m. • Dismissal time is 2:40 p.m. • Parents are to pick up students in the car line. • Please do not come to front of building, classrooms, or bus ramp.
