  3. WV Milestones Prior to 2000 • WVDE Coordinated School Health Program • School-based Health Center Initiative • System of Care – SAMHSA grant 2000 • Bureau for Behavioral Health funds prevention in a few schools (federal block grant $) • SSJHWF funds mental health services in SBHCs

  4. WV Milestones – cont’d 2006 • West Virginia Behavioral Health Commission recommends more school MH services • First meeting between WV Dept of Education & Bureau for Behavioral Health 2007 • ESMH steering team organized • Memo of Understanding signed • Strategic planning process begins

  5. West Virginia Milestones – cont’d • 2008 • Survey of schools • Site visits to other states • Monthly meetings • Designated as subcommittee of WV Behavioral Health Commission (2008) • Expanded School Mental Health planning sites funded (7)

  6. Mission To develop and strengthen policies, practices and services that promote learning and social- emotional well-being for all of WV’s youth through a collaborative process that engages schools, families, and community-based agencies.

  7. VISION Every student in WV will benefit from a school environment that supports social and emotional well-being to achieve his/her full potential.

  8. Definition Expanded School Mental Health refers to programs that build on the core services typically provided by schools. It is a three-tiered framework that includes the full continuum of: • Prevention • Early intervention • Treatment • Serves all students • Emphasizes shared responsibility • between schools and community providers
