How to prepare and present a case analysis • What is a Strategic-Management case? • It describes an organization’s external and internal condition and raises issues concerning the firm’s mission, strategies, objectives and polices. • Includes all related management issues. • Contains facts and opinions, judgments. • Learning by doing

How to prepare and present a case analysis • Guidelines for preparing Case Analysis • Practicality- make reasonable assumptions and make decisions • Justification – how you support your decisions • Realism – no recommendation is beyond an org’s means. • Specificity-no broad generalization –5W+ (what, why, when, how, where and who) • Originality- feasible alternatives (not necessary the same as the firm’s plan) • Contribute – Group exercise in class and real life. Be open-minded to other’s views. Contribute.

How to prepare and present a case analysis • Case methods vs. lecture approach • Be prepared for a discussion along the lines of “What would you do, why would you do it, when would you do it, and how you do it?” • Answers to the questions: • What are the firm’s most important external opportunities and threats? • What are the organization’s major strengths and weakness? • How would you describe the organization’s financial condition? • What are the firm’s competitors, and what are the strategies? • What objectives and strategies do you recommend for this organization? Explain your reasoning. How does what you recommend compare to what the company plans? • How would the organization best implement what you recommend? What implementation problems do you envision? How could the firm avoid or solve those problems?

Are all elements covered? • Develop or improve vision and mission statements for the organization • Identify the organization’s external opportunities and threats • Construct a Competitive Profile Matrix (CPM) • Construct an External Factor Evaluation (EFE) Matrix • Identify the organization’s internal strengths and weakness

How to prepare and present a case analysis • Steps • Construct an Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE) Matrix • Prepare a SWOT matrix, Strategic Position and Action Evaluation (SPACE) Matrix, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Matrix, Internal-External (IE) Matrix,Grand Strategy Matrix, and Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM). Give advantages and disadvantages of alternative strategies • Recommend specific strategies and long-term objectives • Specify how your recommendation can be implemented and what results you can expect. • Recommend specific annual objectives and polices • Recommend procedures for strategy review and evaluation • Confine yourself to the time line of the case. After events may be useful for other studies.

  12. Visual aids • PPTs. handouts,. Flipcharts • Do not overdo. You are the hero(ine) ! – not the visual. • Use simple graphics. • Few and legible fonts. • Few lines per slide. Points only.

  13. Voice • Speak clearly and loudly. • Do not mumble. • Practise. • Slow . When nervous pause and breathe. • Modulate the voice. • Use emphasis where necessary. • Pause when reqd.to sink in.

  14. Body language • Stand erect. On your ‘toes’ .one step ahead. • Do not turn your back to audience. • Eye contact. One – to- one ? • Smile and use humour appropriately. Do not dilute seriousness. • Do not read from notes or PPT. checklist OK.

  15. Interaction. • Questions are best in the end. • Be polite, courteous non-personal, but confident • Understand the Q well. Repeat of paraphrase if necessary. • Take your time if necessary. • Appropriate team members to answer. Seek help / or consult when reqd. from team members.
