  1. Tips on assembling an object box for Chinese teaching James Trapp UCL IOE Confucius Institute for Schools Primary Network Coordinator

  2. Advantages of teaching from objects (snake optional) • grab the children’s attention • stimulate enquiry • encourage collaborative learning • enliven language learning • help integrate language and culture • promote intercultural-understanding • support cross-curricular study

  3. Giving cultural context to language teaching • The development of language and culture are interdependent in any context, but particularly in Chinese…… • …..but what do we mean by “culture”? Is it this:

  4. Or this:

  5. Or even this:

  6. Of course it is all of these…… • And more….. The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively: 20th century popular culture The ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society: Afro-Caribbean culture

  7. So in assembling an object box, cast your net wide!

  8. Look around your home! • Then look again: things that seem ordinary to you can be exciting objects for your students

  9. Go to your local Chinese shop • Things that are familiar but different make great cultural bridges:

  10. And some everyday things are true cultural icons: • Think about all the things this represents: • Red colour • Traditional flavour in modern form • Available everywhere in China • Travel! The unofficial symbol of the Chinese railway station! • Hot water boilers…on trains and even in airports • …………………

  11. If you have a skill, use it:

  12. Even antiques don’t have to be expensive • These are all things examples of things I have bought on ebay for £20 or less: 18th/19th c coins: 99p Early 19th c shipwreck bowl: £14 Ok, not an antique, but you get the idea! £9.99 or less. People are always selling souvenirs from China on ebay. 18th/19th c export porcelain: £16 (items with cracks and chips are valueless to collectors but great for us!)

  13. Other IDEAS:

  14. Now its up to you! But if you want any advice, feel free to email: chinesenetworks@ucl.ac.uk
