  1. Chapter 2The OSI Model Prepared by: Mrs. Wilma M. de Pano

  2. Objectives Upon completion of this chapter, you will be able to familiarize yourself with the: • General Model of Communication • The OSI Reference Model • Comparison of the OSI Model and the TCP/IP Model

  3. Analyzing Network in Layer

  4. Comparing Network

  5. Source, destination and data packets Data or Data Packet – information that flows on a Network

  6. 10 Base2 50 ohm Coaxial Cable Fiber Optic Media

  7. 10 Base5 Thicknet cable UTP Media

  8. Protocols – is a set of rules that make communication on a network more efficient.

  9. ISOInternational Organization for Standardization • They created a network model that would help vendors create networks that would be compatible with, and operate with, other networks.

  10. OSI reference model • Provided the vendors with a set of standards that ensured greater compatibility and interoperability between the various types of network technologies that were produced by the many companies around the world.

  11. Why a layered Network Model? • Reduced complexity • Standardize interfaces • Facilitate modular engineering • Ensure interoperable technology • Accelerate evolution • Simplifies teaching and learning

  12. The 7 Layers of OSI Model

  13. The 7 Layers of OSI Model

  14. The 7 Layers of OSI Model

  15. The 7 Layers of OSI Model

  16. The 7 Layers of OSI Model

  17. The 7 Layers of OSI Model

  18. The 7 Layers of OSI Model

  19. The 7 Layers of OSI Model

  20. Data Encapsulation

  21. Example

  22. Peer-to-Peer Communication

  23. TCP/IPTransmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol

  24. Protocol Graph

  25. Comparing TCP/IP with OSI Model

  26. Similarities Both have layers Both have application layers, though they include very different services Both have comparable transport and network layers Packet-switched technology is assumed Networking professionals need to know both Differences TCP/IP combines the presentation and session layer issues into its application layer TCP/IP combines the OSI data link and physical layers into one layer TCP/IP appears simpler because it has fewer layers TCP/IP protocols are the standards around which the internet developed, so that TCP/IP models gains credibility just bec. of its protocols Similarities and Differences of TCP/IP and OSI Models
