Section 1: AssessmentChapter 1 • STAAR is predictive • Vertical scale • Focus on preparation for HS and College—college ready! • More authentic assessment • Greater depth and complexity • Change to readiness and supporting standards • Examples of Implications • Increase writing tasks • Timed assessments likely • Retest on EOCS for any reason

Chapter 2 • Majority of STAAR will assess content studied that year • More items • Assess critical analysis and process skills in context • Shift from TAKS Objectives to Reporting Categories • Examples of Implications • Science assessments grades 5 and 8 will focus on TEKS as well as content from the two previous grades • Calculators required for all math and science EOC’s • Writing grades 4 and 7 will be administered over two days • English I, II, and III are designed as two day assessments

Chapter 3CCRS • Test questions are being written to gauge the understanding of key concepts required for success or college ready • Student performance will link specific courses to college and career ready • Examples of Implications • Performance tied to Graduation • Early warning indicators will be developed to identify students in need of remediation

  10. Chapter 4STAAR Modified and STAAR Alternate • STAAR Modified developed for 9 of the 12 EOC Assessments (Alg. II, Chemistry and Physics not developed) • STAAR Modified will be course specific • Items decreased by approximately 20% • TEA is recommending that districts not be required to count the STAAR Alternate EOC as 15% of the student’s course grade • Examples of Implications • Increased Rigor • More Field Testing • Vertically Aligned

Chapter 5ELL • Developing ELL assessment policies that will impact accountability • Considering narrowing provisions for exemptions • STAAR L-Linguistically accommodated • Linkage for TELPAS to STAAR • Examples of Implications • Plans for online LA version of STAAR (STAAR L) • May require 2 year phase in • Spanish version of STAAR for grades 3-5 will be implemented spring 2012

Chapter 7STAAR and Graduation Requirements • Cumulative score and scale score will determine satisfactory performance • A minimum score must be achieved to count toward cumulative score • MHSP score is based on number of courses taken • RHSP requires students to meet satisfactory performance on Algebra II and English III • DAP requires students to meet the college readiness standard on Algebra II and English III • COE may determine a method by which a student’s satisfactory performance on other assessments may be used to meet the cumulative score requirement; COE and HE will study feasibility of allowing students to satisfy STAAR EOC performance by completing a dual credit course

Chapter 7 Examples of Implications • Students who have taken HS course before 2011-2012 will not be required to take an EOC • Beginning 2011-2012 middle school students who take HS courses will need to take the EOC • School districts will determine the method for utilizing the EOC score as 15% of the final grade
