Earthquakes...

We Know where they occur, mainly on the Earth’s Plate Boundaries.

Why do They Occur?

- As the Plates rub past each other
the pressure builds up.

- Then all of a sudden it is released.

How Do We Measure an

Earthquake?

We use the Richter Scale.

This tells us how strong it was - 1 being weak and 10 being absolute devastation.

How are earthquakes recorded?

Earthquakes are recorded on a seismograph. The print out tells us how powerful the earthquake was and how long it lasted.

What Happens in an Earthquake?

This has Happened in Japan.

Japan is located on a PLATE BOUNDARY.

The Pacific Plate is being pushed under the Eurasion Plate.

This causes a DESTRUCTIVE Plate Boundary.

January, 1995, Kobe, Japan...

What happened…

- 7.2 on the Richter Scale.
- 5000 people died
- 25 000 injured
- 56 000 buildings needed re-building.
